Training & Development, a Strong Commitment

As the accounting profession continues to evolve, it is increasingly important or CPA firms to invest in the training and development of their staff. Not only does ongoing education help CPAs stay current with new technologies and regulations, but it also plays a critical role in staff retention. According to a study by the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA), firms with a strong commitment to staff training and development have a retention rate of 89%, compared to only 54% for firms with a weak commitment to training and development.

But what exactly does a “strong commitment” to training and development look like? The AICPA study found that firms with a strong commitment to training and development typically:

  • Offer a wide variety of training opportunities, including both technical and success skills training.
  • Encourage staff to pursue professional development opportunities, such as continuing education courses and certifications.
  • Invest in technology and tools that help staff perform their jobs more efficiently and effectively.
  • Provide mentoring and coaching to help staff advance in their careers.

In addition to these best practices, the AICPA study also found that firms with a strong commitment to training and development had higher revenue growth and profitability compared to firms with a weak commitment. This is likely because well-trained staff are better equipped to serve clients and identify new business opportunities.

Another important aspect of training and development is the employee’s ability to see a clear path for career advancement within the firm. A study by the Association for Talent Development found that organizations with a clear career development plan had 14.4% lower turnover rates compared to those that did not.

Of course, training and development is not the only factor that affects staff retention. Firms also need to provide competitive compensation, a positive work-life integration, and a supportive culture to retain top talent. But as the AICPA study shows, a strong commitment to training and development is a critical component of retention strategy.
